58893963Harshali Singh’s debut novel A Window To Her Dreams presents a picture of domestic trials and tribulations that transmutes into a tale of the indefatigable spirit of a woman. The author has effectively crafted a story known to many Indian households but one that is seldom reiterated. The novel is an inspiring read for women struggling to find a voice that can face and conquer their inner demons and the ghosts of their past.
A Window To Her Dreams follows Aruna, who tries to build a solid foundation for her second marriage, but has her situation topsy-turvy due to a storm from her past. A strong-willed woman, Aruna decides to take control of destiny and not let her second marriage go the way of the first. The book is a story of Aruna and Bhuvan trying find each other amidst all the darkness and fighting together to seek a life of fulfilment.
But A Window To Her Dreams is also as much about Aruna’s family as about her marriage. Her parents and six siblings (five sisters and one brother) live in an ancient haveli in Old Delhi. What is interesting about the narrative is that every character in this family gets to illustrate the story through their own perspective.
Interestingly, the 150-year-old haveli holds pride of place amongst the characters and is actually the narrator of the story, giving us an insight into the wondrous mingling of diverse characters and their relationships with each other.
In a rather bold move, Harshali already has laid plans in this narrative for 6 sequels — one dedicated to each of the siblings! And, what’s more, she has effectively sowed the seeds for these in this book itself!
The cover is a painting by the author herself, and shows Aruna looking outside the window. This effectively projects a metaphor to illustrate a yearning to fly past boxed ideas — a will to rise above the societal limits. Harshali Singh has portrayed a tale of dreams, desires, and courage. A Window To Her Dreams is a story that highlights the grit and determination of repressed women in our culture.
The book is an interesting read, involving the reader as an interested spectator in the trials and tribulations and emotional labyrinths of a family.
