Edu Dept sanctions Rs 43 crores for school furniture, fixtures

SRINAGAR: Government prioritising furniture for schools to be designated as polling stations for upcoming elections over thousands of school children who sit on floors at the institutions, the School Education Department (SED) has sanctioned Rs 43 crore for “furniture and fixture” at schools.
In an order issued last Wednesday, Secretary School Education, Ajeet Kumar Sahu gave sanction to “advance drawal of Rs 43 crore under Capex (capital expenditure) budget” for the current fiscal.The amount-Rs 21.5 crore each for Director School Education Kashmir and Jammu- the order said, had been sanctioned for upgradation of “furniture and fixture” at high and higher secondary schools in the state.
An official said that it can be utilised for furnishing schools “in general”. The sanctioned amount as per the order will be kept at the disposal of the Samagra Shiksha J&K for utilisation. As reported by Kashmir Reader on February 22, the Directorate of School Education recently sanctioned over Rs 2 crore “to meet out expenditure for purchase of office furniture in the schools where polling stations shall be set up during the Parliament/Assembly elections”. The Rs 2 crore for schools to be specifically designated as polling stations came weeks after the School Education Department had told the State.
